Fifty years ago, Bob Dylan and The Band came together for a whirlwind of 40 concerts over 42 days, often performing two shows a night. Their double live album, Before The Flood, captured some recordings from their shows in New York and Los Angeles, but that was just a small fraction of what they recorded during the tour.
Now, the rest is finally being released on September 20 in the box set Bob Dylan: The 1974 Live Recordings, which includes 27 discs and 431 tracks. This collection features newly mixed recordings from all of Dylan’s concerts, accompanied by notes from Elizabeth Nelson. (Please note that songs by The Band are not included in this box set.) You can get an exclusive preview of "Forever Young" from the February 9, 1974 concert in Seattle, Washington!
In September, Third Man Records will also release a three-disc box set dedicated to the songs not included on Before The Flood, titled The 1974 Live Recordings – The Missing Songs From Before the Flood.
This tour marked Bob Dylan's return to the stage after an eight-year hiatus. During this time, The Band transitioned from being Dylan's anonymous backing group to one of America's most popular rock bands, with hits like "The Weight," "Up On Cripple Creek," and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down."
The demand to see them back together was unprecedented, resembling the height of Beatlemania a decade earlier. Promoters received 5.5 million ticket requests, a figure that, as rock historian Clinton Heylin notes in his Dylan biography Behind The Shades, represented nearly 4% of the American population.
This was at the peak of the Watergate scandal and the end of the Vietnam War. The weary America was thirsty for happier times, evidenced by the phenomenal success of George Lucas’s film American Graffiti, the Beach Boys’ hit collection Endless Summer, the Broadway musical Grease, and the new sitcom Happy Days.
Few cultural figures embodied the previous decade as much as Dylan. "I was considered the songwriter of a generation or the voice of a generation," he told Robert Hilburn in 1992. "That was the label imposed on me at the time. I had to deal with it. When I went back on tour, nothing was working for me. I had lost my purpose. I didn’t know what I was doing out there; people were throwing flowers at me and all that. I didn’t know what they expected from me. It was a crazy time."
The tour kicked off on January 3, 1974, at the Chicago Stadium. Dylan opened with the very obscure 1963 studio cover "Hero Blues," and later that night, he performed "All Along The Watchtower" and "Forever Young" live for the first time. He also accompanied The Band as they played several of their original songs—a practice he abandoned during the second concert later that evening and never resumed for the rest of the tour.
Recordings were made during most of the tour in preparation for Before The Flood, which hit stores on June 20, 1974. The 40 concerts were recorded by members of the audience, but the 27 professional recordings stayed locked away for the past 50 years. They are now being released due to European copyright legislation that states all recordings fall into the public domain if they remain unpublished for 50 years after their creation. This is why Dylan’s camp has released several copyright-protected albums over the last decade. The 2016 box set, The 1966 Live Recordings, sometimes used audience recordings. However, this 1974 collection relies solely on professional recordings.
