ALL4ONE #526 – Songs That Speak Up, U2’s “One Life at a Time,” The Byrds’ Legacy & 1976
Classic Hits, Deep Cuts & More
This 526th episode of ALL4ONE opens with artists who use their songs to speak up. Bruce Springsteen (“Streets of Minneapolis”), Zach Bryan (“Bad News”), Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts (“Big Crime”), and Bryan Adams (“Lake Ontario”) each explain, in their own way, what moved them to write. U2’s “One Life at a Time” follows, a song written for Awdah Hathaleen, a Palestinian father of three killed in 2025 in his West Bank village. Bono describes it as a beautiful melody offered as a kind of balm. Maggie Rose & Ruston Kelly, Sam Barber, The Decemberists, and The Revivalists carry the themes of peace and hope, before Old Crow Medicine Show, Turnpike Troubadours & Sierra Hull, Kings of Leon, Robert Plant, Peter Gabriel, and David Bowie with Pat Metheny’s “This Is Not America” close the first hour.
The second hour goes back to the roots. The Lemon Twigs’ tribute to Byrds-style power pop leads into the real thing: the Byrds’ “Your Gentle Way of Loving Me” (1968), the Byrds’ reunion on “Who Taught the Night” (1980), and Roger McGuinn with Tom Petty on an early take of “King of the Hill” (1987). Petty returns with a 2026 mix of “Since You Said You Love Me / Wild Eyes / Up in Mississippi Tonight,” followed by Val McCallum and Jackson Browne’s “Jason in My Dream.” The show closes with a tribute to 1976, which turns 50 this year: Jackson Browne, Eagles, Boston, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Elton John.
